HOW TO Buy a domain FROM GOOGLE DOMAIN

Choose an effective domain name

Selecting a domain name is an important step in getting online. Your domain name can shape your website users’ initial impressions of your business or organization. An effective domain name can help increase user interest and drive web traffic.

Best practices

Here are some guidelines to help you choose the best domain for you:

  • Name length: We recommend short domain names, typically between 3 to 4 terms. Short domains are easier to remember and type which helps users navigate directly to your site.
  • Keywords: Make sure the terms in your domain name are relevant to the content you publish. Descriptive words help first-time viewers recognize what the site is about. Additionally, descriptive words can improve the chances that your site shows up to users who are searching for related products or services.
  • Location: If your intended audience is in a particular area, you may want to include that location in your domain name. Doing so can help filter out any unintended audience outside your scope.
  • Brand name: A brand is a unique, identifying persona that can help your domain stand out. Brands create potential for distinctiveness and longevity because users can quickly recognize established brands. Brands can take time to develop, but a successful brand can pay dividends for your site’s popularity.
  • Domain endings: The most popular domain ending is .com, but Google Domains offers a variety of endings, ranging from .academy to .zone. See the full list of domain endings. More specific endings can help create a distinctive image and better communicate the purpose of your site.

Things to avoid

Here are some elements that may negatively impact your domain name’s perception:

  • Numbers or dashes: These characters can make your site name harder to type or remember.
  • Misspellings of existing words or business names: These attributes can make your site seem suspicious for spamming or phishing.
  • Similarity to an existing brand or trademark: Naming your site and hosting content in a way that appears similar to an existing business may cause copyright or abuse complaints against you, potentially resulting in domain suspension and/or legal action.

Search for a domain

How to search for a domain

  1. Navigate to https://domains.google.com/registrar.
  2. Enter a name in the search box at the top of the page.
    • Learn about domain name insights.
  3. Review the search results to determine if the domain is available. If it is and you’re ready to purchase, buy the domain.

Refine your search

When you search for a domain, Google Domains automatically searches for that domain with several popular endings (.com, .business). You have several options to refine your search:

  • Search for a specific ending: If you’re interested in a specific ending for your domain (example.com), include it in your search. See a list of available domains and their prices.
  • Find more available endings: Enter only your preferred domain name (e.g. example), and let Google Domains show you some available variations.
  • See all available endings for a domain: At the top of your search results page, turn on All endings to view all possible domains endings for your search string.

Use non-ascii characters

To search for domains with non-ASCII characters, you can use 2 methods:

  • Paste the characters directly into the search bar, like グーグル.
  • Enter the punycode representation of the characters, like xn--qcka1pmc.

Each domain ending supports different non-ASCII characters. The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) has a list of character sets each domain ending supports. If you try to use characters a domain ending doesn’t support, the Google Domains interface lets you know.

For countries where Google Domains is available, you can use Google Domains to purchase a domain. By default, Google Domains provides a one-year registration period and opts you in to auto-renew (step 6 below).

How to buy a domain

Follow these instructions to purchase a domain:

  1. Search for an available domain. Identify the one you’d like to purchase.
  2. Click Add to cart .
  3. To review your cart, click View cart. To remove a domain, click the trash can Delete  next to a name.

  6. Google Domains defaults to opting you in to Auto-renew. You can choose to opt out, if desired. Auto-renew helps you keep ownership of your domain by not missing a payment. When auto-renew is on, Google automatically bills the payment method on your account each year around the time your domain expires. Learn more about renewal options.
  7. Click Checkout at the bottom of your cart.
  8. Enter or edit the Contact information for the domain. The information you enter becomes the public contact information for your domain in the WHOIS database.
  9. Select your payment method.
  10. Click Buy. Processing your registration can take up to a few minutes.

Premium domain

A premium domain is one that the current owner offers for sale or resale at a premium price. There are 2 kinds of premium domains:

Aftermarket domain: The current domain owner offers it for resale for a premium price. Once you purchase the domain, you can add multiple years of registration and renew at the regular price for the top-level domain (TLD) of the domain (for example, $12.00 per year for a .com).

Premium domain: The registry offers the domain for a premium price. In most cases, the registry charges a different fee for transfers, additional years of registration, renewal, and restoration from the base price for that domain’s ending. To acquire a premium domain, the registrant may require you to pay a higher one-time cost. Google automatically adds this cost, if applicable, to your registration fee.

Get insights when you search for a domain

To help you choose an effective domain name, Google Domains shows you insights about each available name that appears in your search results.

How Insights work

Lots of factors are included in Insights, such as:

  • Length: Is your domain name short, average, or long?
  • Memorability: Does your domain name have qualities that make it easy to remember, like rhyme and alliteration?
  • Complexity: Is your domain name easy to pronounce and type? Does it have a word that can easily be misspelled or confused for another word?

When you search for a domain, Google Domains automatically checks all your available search results for these factors and uses them to give you some information to consider about each name.

Insights are based only on the domain name. Some of the factors that are ignored include opinions, products, and services offered by any businesses or organizations referenced in a name, and any content hosted on a domain by a previous owner.

Insights aren’t related to and have no impact on search ranking.

Find Insights

  1. Navigate to Google Domains search.
  2. At the top of the page, enter a name in the search box.
  3. In the search results, select a name to view insights about it.
